Narrative Character Example

Jethrow.

(All characters start at age 14 , when you send your narration in, do not use ages or to define when things happen, just the outline starting at 14. )

Jethrow was born in the Iron Islands, the son of a Raider and his wife. As a young boy he played hard, studied little and prepared himself for a life of raiding the soft shores of the Westerlands! His teen years were focused on the family business, of raiding, and his formative years focused on those skills, he is now 18.

At age 18 he spends a further 2 years raiding as part of the crew, spending time rowing, fixing sails, and raiding. This grants him 18 points to spend on skill which can be added to any skill on a one skill point for one percent basis (to a max of 5 per skill), or he can spend 5 of them to open a new skill at the opening Rank. He is now 20 and Jethrow opts to spend as follows

Jumping at Rank 4 + 2%
Spear at Rank 6 + 2%
Round Shield at Rank 6 + 2%
Keltan at Rank 5 + 2%
Seamanship at Rank 4 + 2%

And because he hopes to be elevated within his ship to a better position he spends 5 Skill points training with the Battle Axe!

That Opens at Rank 3.

There is little else to do in the Iron Islands for a warrior so he pushes on with his career and sure enough his dedication pays off and he is elevated to the position of Raid leader, this leads to four more years of raiding and he is now 24 and has gained skills as follows

Jethrow pushes on, he’s in his prime and raiding is in his blood, Four more years he says! Four years raiding gives him 36 points to spend (10 max per skill / 5 to open a new skill)

During the 4 years Jethrow developed his skills as follows, previous training is shown in brackets.

At this point Jethrow is 28 and hears about some old friends that are up to no good, he decides to see what they are up to, and also the coast of the Westerlands has been poor pickings the past 2 years!

With his skills now done we can now decide how to build Jethrow’s stats to fit the warrior he has become. His time has been spent very much as a warrior with little to no schooling so his points spend will be mainly in str / sta / dex / agil

  • EYESIGHT :: 18 (spends 7)
  • HEARING :: 14 (spends 3)

  • VOICE :: 14 (spends 4)
  • COMELINESS :: 10 (spends 1)

So he has spent 50 of 50 Points

Wanting a couple more he risks a roll on the medical table, he gets more points for doing this after narration than before as there is a higher risk it could really effect the character.

He rolls….62 : During his time raiding he was horribly scarred he loses 1d3 Comeliness which drops it to 8 (he can not spend to increase that now), he does however gain 2 CPs to spend elsewhere. He bumps up his DEXTERITY to 14, those scars taught him to move faster! He’s feeling lucky, what else befell him. Rolls…23 ; Jethrow is an ugly bastard not only is he scared he has a gruesome visible facial birth mark that costs him another d3 Comeliness , he loses 1, perhaps not that gruesome after all! His Comeliness is down to 7, The 2 extra points he spends on STAMINA to 15 and DEXTERITY to 15.

At that point he decides not to push his luck any further.

His Rolled and derived and picked stats work out as follows

Sunsign :: He Rolls 12 and 17, He is born on the 17th of the 12th Month (Lado)
Morality :: He Picks Law Abiding. (12) – note, that’s Ironborn Law Abiding, to the Ironborn laws and customs.
Deity :: He Picks Drowned God
Initial Piety Points :: He rolls 19

…and Money. 14 years as a raider, he made 6408d of which he has saved 640d

And now the final skills list – and how they are worked out. Some examples!

Seamanship at Rank 4 + 2% :: Attributes are : (STR/DEX/AGL)/3 + 3 for sunsign = a skill base of 18 :: He is Rank 4 = 18*4 = 72 + 2% = Mastery Level of 74% (his max is 118%)

Battle Axe Rank 4 + 10% :: Attributes are : (STR/STR/DEX)/3 + 0 for sunsign = a skill base of 16 :: He is Rank 4 = 16*4 = 64 + 10% = Mastery Level of 74% (his max is 116%)

Initiative Rank 6 (+ 1%) + 10% :: Attributes are : (AGL/WIL/WIL)/3 + 0 for sunsign = a skill base of 11 :: He is Rank 6 = 11*6 = 66 + 10% = Mastery Level of 76% (his max is 111%)

Piloting Rank 1 + 10% :: Attributes are : (DEX/EYE/INT)/3 + 3 for sunsign = a skill base of 17 :: He is Rank 1 = 17*1 = 17 + 10% = Mastery Level of 27% (his max is 117%)

Climbing at Rank 4 + 2% :: Attributes are : (STR/DEX/AGL)/3 + 0 for sunsign = a skill base of 15 :: He is Rank 4 = 15*4 = 60+ 2% = Mastery Level of 62% (his max is 115%)

Any skill with a mastery level of 40% or higher can start to focus on specialties. During training specialties increase by 2% rather than 1%.

Well okay.…but what if Jethrow wants to learn something new, like Swimming before he falls over board!!! Well the first time you try anything new, you immediately open that skill at its’ base OML , which for swimming is SB*1 where SB is (STR/DEX/AGL)/3 + 3 for sun sign so Jethrow would have a skill of 18%. Getting better would require practice or if he should fall into the water during a battle (and not drown) he may benefit from a stress roll (basically a free training check) .

The same applies the first time he throws some dice in a gambling den, picks up a flail or tries brewing beer.

Note ALL combat skills that have a skill over 70% can no longer be trained, they only increase through actual combat and stress checks. Lack of practice might result in skills degrading too.

NB :: After doing all that I totally forgot to increase his strength due to his weight…which would have increased by 3, from 17 to 20!!

And his agility which is effected by frame…. and decreased by 1 from 14 to 13.
